About the Ayushman Bharat Yojana
The Ayushman Bharat Yojana is a flagship programme of the Government of India, launched in line with the recommendations of the National Health Policy 2017 to achieve universal health coverage. This programme targets the economically weaker sections of society and follows a continuum of care approach. It has two interlinked components: Health and Wellness Centres and the Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana.
Centres for health and wellness
In February 2018, the Indian government announced the establishment of 150,000 health and wellness care centres. This initiative involves the transformation of existing sub-centres and primary healthcare centres. These centres provide a wide range of healthcare services, including maternal and child healthcare and services for non-communicable diseases. Essential medicines and diagnostic services are provided free of charge to ensure accessibility for all.
Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojna
The Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Ranchi, Jharkhand, in September 2018. Formerly known as the National Health Protection Scheme, the scheme is India’s largest health insurance initiative and aims to provide health coverage to around 50 million citizens. Under the scheme, eligible individuals receive e-cards to access secondary and tertiary healthcare services without cash transactions, benefiting the underprivileged in particular. As of September 2019, the scheme has enrolled 18,059 hospitals, enrolled over 4.4 million beneficiaries and issued over 100 million e-cards, significantly improving healthcare accessibility and inclusivity.
